Located on Pressley Street in Downtown Pittsburgh on the city’s North Shore stands The Priory Hotel. Formerly known as St. Mary’s Priory, it served as a monastery for Benedectine monks and priests in the late 1880’s. Nearly one hundred years later, it was slated for demolition for a new highway project. But in the early 1980’s, it was saved and put up for auction. Business executive Edward Graf and his wife Mary Ann purchased the property and opened The Priory Hotel in 1986.

This is certainly an abbreviated history of an important Pittsburgh building, but the reason you’ve come is to know if The Priory is haunted.

H2: Is The Priory Hotel Haunted?

We’ve scoured the internet to find out if The Priory Hotel is haunted. There seems to be almost no evidence to hint that the hotel is haunted. Now, is that to say that the ghosts of monks past don’t stalk the halls or reside in their rooms? Of course not. But there just doesn’t seem to be real evidence, or even anecdotal, that The Priory is haunted.

To satisfy your curiosity, we did poke around some chat room boards and some users have offered up some potential Priory encounters. Aside from the generic tellings of how it’s haunted without any additional information or stories, we did find two potential encounters.

One claimed that a family member woke in the middle of the night to see a woman brushing her hair. This figure supposedly walked towards the door and disappeared. Another said there was yelling in their ear and then their mattress shook. When staff was asked about the supposed encounter, they allegedly had no answer.

While these two incidents are not totally convincing that The Priory is haunted, it does leave room for speculation. But until more definitive proof comes out, it seems The Priory is leaning in the direction of not haunted…for now.
