Top 10 Ghostly Images of Gettysburg

In 1863, the American Civil War saw a turning point in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Over 50,000 people lost their lives at the Battle of Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle of the war and the inspiration for Abraham Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address.

But with so much carnage and destruction, is it so hard to believe that the spirits of so many killed in such a violent way have yet to find solace in their demise?

Many books have been written, shows filmed, and conversations had around the ghosts of Gettysburg. Legends of ghosts roaming key areas of the battlefield and the surrounding town have been reported ever since the conclusion of the costly and deadly battle. Even though it’s been over 150 years since the smoke has cleared, the sounds, smells, and sights of this decisive battle may still linger.

Pictures of Ghosts in Gettysburg

Let’s take a look at some of the evidence ghost hunters and history buffs point to as potential proof of Gettysburg’s ghostly residents.

1. Ghosts or Water Mark?

Video courtesy of New York Post (YouTube)

In this video featured by the New York Post, many wonder if an eerie image of two ghosts running across the road is real. Many in the comments are quick to point out the apparent watermark creating a smudge on the windshield, but why ruin the fun?

2. Who (Or What) Is Behind That Tree?

In this eerie night vision photo posted to Reddit by one user in the subreddit “Ghosts,” something or someone appears to be lurking to the left of the two most visible trees. Its shape looks like a figure, but could this simply be a bush?

3. Fire Hydrant or Lost Soul?

Before you jump to similar conclusions as many of the comments, what fire department would put a hydrant that far out into the street? Posted to Reddit by this user, they happened to capture this mysterious photo while on a ghost tour. Some comments think it’s cool, some have their own theories, but a strange number of commenters feel like it’s a fire hydrant. To be fair, that was my first thought too.

4. Is This Guy Lost?

In this fairly realistic looking photo, you can clearly see a guy dressed like a Civil War soldier walking around. One of three things could be true about this photo. My first thought is this is genuinely a ghost and Gettysburg is haunted as f*ck. Second, this could be someone doing a really well-produced staged photo leaving us all to question if ghosts are real. And third, a Civil War reenactor is lost and just wants to get home. In that case, we hope you make it, pal.

5. Is This Dude for Real?

Image courtesy of Psykadea via r/Ghost (Reddit)

The entire context around this photo is wild. The poster says his friend caught the full body ghost way in the back while in the woods at night. He adds it was very dark. But the photo is incredibly bright and even with enhancement, the figure walking in the back is clear as absolute day. Could someone be out walking their dog? Maybe they work remote and wanted to get some steps in? Or perhaps this is the ghost of a soldier stalking the grounds because he drew the short end of the stick with the night watch. The comments aren’t buying it, but we’ll let you judge for yourself.

6. Look Both Ways Before You Cross the Path!

You might think this video is total B.S. I did, until I watched it a few times and realized over 2.5 million people have as well. As you watch the video, you’ll see what appears to be an obvious spirit crossing the road. For an old war zone, the ghost guy looks pretty calm.

7. We Have to Include Some Orbs

Nothing beats a good orb sighting. Orbs are small circles of light that usually appear in areas with supernatural occurrences. Why not Gettysburg, right? Believe it or not, there isn’t a whole lot to say. Could be spots on the camera, the way light is hitting the lens, or actually orbs.

8. Just a Couple of Ghosts Out for a Stroll

Video courtesy of TCBallinger (YouTube)

Another compelling video from the same poster of a previous video on this list, you can clearly see multiple ghostly figures make their way across the field. Now, one must wonder how this one person seems to capture all of these ghosts on camera. I’m not saying these are fake, but you can’t tell me that thought hasn’t crossed your mind. If this video is real, whoever shot it needs an award and an honorary Ghosbusters degree.

9. Nothing to See Here, Just a Guy (or Ghost) in a Field

As this poster was going through photos, they noticed this figure standing out in the field. Not sure which way this ghostly figure is facing, but judging from the angle, I wouldn’t want it to see me snapping a pic. To be fair, this ghost is clearly not camera shy seeing as it’s walking in a wide open field. But then again, if it’s mid-1800’s Gettysburg, there are more pressing things to worry about.

10. The Man in the Window

It took me a while to see it, but there is a figure in the window. Now, the house is well lit so this could be some sort of light distortion. But given that this is from a reputable haunted tour company, you have to give more credit to the fact that this house is haunted AF. Without knowing all the details of the route or the significance of this house, it felt fitting to wrap up our list with a Gettysburg ghostly mystery.
